Government Medical Experience (GME) YEAR
Upon successful completion of internship, practitioners are registered as Medical Practitioners on the Main Register and/or Provisional Register as case maybe to undertake Government Medical Experience (GME). During this period practitioners based at District Hospitals are referred to as Government Medical Officers (GMOs) whilst those based at Central Hospitals are known as Senior House Officers (SHOs). During the first GME year practitioners can be issued with a limited private practising certificate upon application that authorizes them to do locums and during the second GME year practitioners are eligible for an Open Practising Certificate that allows them to undertake private practice.
Assessment of the GME year
During the GME year practitioners are assessed using the GME logbook. The assessment is based on a set of expected competencies and practice outcomes covering the domains of Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

POSTGRADUATE TRAINING
Upon completion of the Government Medical Experience, practitioners become eligible for specialist training. There are various M Med programmes offered by the UZ College of Health Sciences. During the MMed training period practitioners are referred to as Registrars and upon successful completion they undertake one year supervised Senior Registrar. Upon Completion practitioners are eligible for registration in the specialist register.
