The Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe is a statutory body established in terms of Section 29 of the Health Professions Act (Chapter 27:19) whose responsibility is to regulate the medical and dental professions in Zimbabwe. The functions of the Council inter-alia are to REGISTER, EDUCATE AND DISCIPLINE the medical and dental professions.
In terms of Section 30 of the Health Professions Act (Chapter 27:19) the functions of the Council are to:
- Assist in the promotion of the health of the population of Zimbabwe
- Regulate, control and supervise all matters affecting the training of the medical and dental professions
- Promote liaison in the field of training both in Zimbabwe and elsewhere and to monitor , enforce and improve the standards of such training in Zimbabwe
- Advise the Minister on any matter affecting the medical and dental professions
- Communicate to the Minister information on matters of public importance acquired by the Council in the performance of its functions
- Consider and determine applications for the registration of professions concerned subject to such conditions whether as to qualifications or otherwise as may be prescribed by the Council
- Establish and maintain one or more registers for registrations
- Issue practicing certificates to registered persons, cancel or suspend such certificates in terms of the act
- Define and enforce ethical practice and discipline among registered persons
- Encourage co-operation between the Council and other councils
- Take such steps as appear to the Council to be necessary or desirable to advance the standing and effectiveness of the medical and dental professions.
- Present the views of registered persons on national, regional and international issues
- Evaluate and monitor the standards of qualifying examinations, courses and training of registered professions
- Evaluate any examinations, training courses and qualifications of foreign institutions for the purpose of registration
- Perform any other function that may be conferred or imposed upon the Council by the Act or any enactment
